Island Water World robbers sentenced

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — The Court of First Instance on December 7, sentenced three of the four suspects, who stood trial three weeks ago, suspected of committing an armed robbery on May 16, 2016 at Island Water World.

  • D.L.M. (21) was sentenced to 40 months in jail of which 10 months suspended.
  • T.P. (18) was sentenced to 38 months in jail of which 10 suspended.

He was only 17 years old when the armed robbery was committed, but was sentenced by the court as an adult, as was requested by the Prosecutor’s Office, seeing the seriousness of the crime committed. The Prosecutor’s Office had requested jail sentences of 4 years for D.L.M. and T.P.

A.A.L. (20) was found guilty of complicity in an armed robbery and sentenced to 30 months in jail of which 6 months suspended. The Prosecutor’s Office had asked for a two and a half year jail sentence against him.

The fourth suspect D.R.W. was acquitted of all charges by the Court of First Instance. The Prosecutor’s Office had asked for 4 years in jail against D.R.W.

On May 16, three armed men entered Island Water World and ordered the employees and clients at gunpoint to lay on the ground. They took approximately US $2,500 and two cell phones and left in a white Toyota Yaris.
