PHILIPSBURG – Minister of VROMI Angel Meyers stressed that disposal of commercial waste on the landfill is a responsibility of commercial entities, and not the garbage collectors.

With the new garbage collection contract in effect, the Minister noted that in especially the Philipsburg area, commercial garbage has not been collected by the new garbage collection contractors. However, he asserted that the onus is on the commercial entities to have their garbage disposed of.

“There is distinction between the household and the commercial waste. The contractor that was awarded parcel 1 (Philipsburg) is living up to his obligation by collecting household waste. However, what we have seen in the last few days is commercial waste, which is the responsibility of commercial establishments not being collected in a timely fashion,” the Minister noted.

He explained that commercial entities can enter into private arrangements to have their garbage collected and disposed. According to the regulations, this waste has to be collected by 8:00pm each day. Commercial waste from restaurants and bars will be collected at 12:00am. Failure to do this can result in fines in accordance with articles 19 and 20 of the Waste Ordinance.

“The producers of commercial waste are obligated to dispose of this waste to the assigned landfill at their own expense,” the Minister said.
