GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) – The Fire Department on October 1st started its campaign to highlight and promote, “Smoke Detectors Save Lives.”

On October 1st the department hooked up a smoke detector in a house of a resident in Union Farm. The family received instructions on how they can protect their home better against fires and how to set up an emergency plan so that every family member knows what to do in case of a fire.

The 15 minute session was closed off with the installation of a smoke detector. Two other families in the Dutch Quarter area also received a session and had a smoke detector installed by fire fighters.

The smoke detectors are part of the Fire Departments Fire Prevention Month activities for the month of October which are being sponsored by Nagico Insurances.

Other companies already have committed to sponsor a month of installation of smoke detectors, and firefighters will continue to have a limited amount of sessions and installations of smoke detectors in the coming months.

The Fire Department has as a main task the prevention of loss of life, injuries and property damage due to fire and other type of incidents.

The Fire Department doesn’t only respond to incidents like fires, car accidents and gas leaks, but is also committed on advising and educating the general public on how to prevent such incidents.

Any resident that would like to make their home safer and have a smoke detector installed by the firefighters are invited to call 543-1318 for an appointment with the Fire Department.
