BVI — In a unanimous verdict, a nine-member jury this afternoon found Irene Mars guilty on a charge of wounding with intent.

The case stemmed from an incident in which she stabbed her estranged lover in the abdomen during a domestic dispute on March 30, 2013.

The incident unfolded at Mars’ Purcell Estate residence on Tortola.

Following the verdict which was returned in less than an hour of deliberating, the convicted woman’s attorney Stephen Daniels urged High Court judge Justice Nicola Byer to extend his client’s bail, pending her sentencing.

However, Justice Byer turned down the request, adding that it would ‘open the flood gates’ for similar requests in future cases of like nature.

The judge however indicated that she would ensure that Mars gets a speedy sentencing.

“I will ensure that the sentence hearing is heard sooner than later, but unfortunately Miss Mars cannot go home this evening,” added Justice Byer.

The sentencing hearing has been set for July 2.

Mars, who appeared composed following the verdict, was eventually taken away in handcuff to Her Majesty’s Prison.
