Archaeological Survey Conducted Ahead of Harbour Breakwater Extension

Sint Eustatius — An underwater archaeological survey was conducted at the entrance to St. Eustatius Harbour, northwest of and along the existing breakwater, as part of the preparatory phase for the planned extension of the harbour breakwater.

The survey, conducted between 20 and 24 January, was carried out by The Shipwreck Survey team in collaboration with local underwater heritage specialists Taro Merkman, Fi de Wit, and Courtney van Rij. Operational support was provided by local dive operator ScubAqua.

The survey focused on identifying potential underwater cultural heritage and assessing seabed conditions relevant to archaeological preservation. All activities were conducted in accordance with recognised safety and professional standards, while ensuring minimal disruption to normal harbour operations.

The findings will be compiled into an official advisory report from an underwater heritage perspective. This advice will be submitted to the Executive Council and will inform the next steps, including communication with the community and decision-making related to the planned harbour expansion.
