SCELL-USM donates D’OGA classes to the More Movement for Elderly program.



~Kick off class this Saturday at USM – Two activities this Saturday for seniors ~

GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) – The School for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (SCELL) from the University of Saint Maarten (USM) has donated D’OGA classes for expansion of the More Movement for Elderly program.

Under this expansion, the program will now have 4 monthly activities free of charge for persons 60 years and over. Participants can join the D’OGA class every first Wednesday of the month at the USM location.

The More Movement for the Elderly Campaign has joined with D’OGA, a program of SCELL-USM and National Institute of the Arts (NIA), to further promote healthier living habits for the population of the country and seniors as a special target group through D’OGA.

For this date, March 18th, seniors can choose between two free activities. The first one is the free Saturday Class at St. Martins Home in St. John’ s Estate, provided by CPS partner White and Yellow Cross Care Foundation (WYCCF).

The second will be the introductory launch of the D’OGA classes. The adjusted schedule of activities will be available to public in April.

The free session by USM SCELL and NIA starts from 9.00AM and ends 11.00AM. D’OGA helps individuals to de-stress after a hard day at work; breathe and relax to improve memory; live longer and healthier. Join and learn about anatomy, spirituality, physiology, meditation and the importance of breathing.

Other benefits are clarity of the mind, strengthening you circulation and lung capacity. Participants are requested to bring along a mat for the yoga-exercise.

Seniors can choose to either join the free session of D’OGA on Saturday or the More Movement for the Elderly Fitness at the St. Martin’s Home which is located at St. John’s Estate road #6. They can also attend both if they wish to do so.

To stay healthy or to improve health, older adults need to do two types of physical activity each week: aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity.

Older adults aged 60 or older, who are generally fit and have no health conditions that limit their mobility, should try to be active daily.

The activity has been organized and coordinated over a one-year period by Collective Prevention Services (CPS), a department from the Sint Maarten Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour, the White and Yellow Cross Care Foundation (WYCCF), Windward Islands Physical Therapist Association (WIPTA) and I&I Fitness.

The Saturday activity is being coordinated by WYCCF from 10.30AM to 12.00PM at the aforementioned address.

It’s recommended that adults aged 60 or older do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking every week, and muscle-strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms).

Some activity, however light, is better for your health than none at all.
