SXM Reads Family Reading Night

PHILIPSBURG – SXM Reads had another successful “Family Reading Night.” Over 15 families from Ruby Labega Primary School and other parents and children attended September’s Family Reading Night.

Two books were read by two members of the SXM Reads committee Patti Maier and Merlese Lake. They demonstrated to parents how to make reading fun for their children. After this demonstration each family received a book to read together. The families really enjoyed the reading session. Reading together as a family is a positive and fun activity.

Each family received a book to keep and practice family reading at home. Along with the book, the families received a gift bag of stationary materials from Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise.

Family Reading Night occurs every month at the library. The purpose is to promote reading and increase literacy skills. “We would like to thank Principal Jeffers, Student Councilor Maureen Hodge, Teacher Clark, other teachers, parents and students of Ruby Labega School for being the 1st school to participate in the Family Reading Night for the new school term 2016-2017,” a release stated.

The next Family Reading Night is scheduled for October 20. The public is welcome to come in with their families and be part of Family Reading Night.

“SXM Reads” campaign is focused on promoting literacy and supporting people with low literacy skills. This is a partnership between the Philipsburg Jubilee Library, St. Maarten National Commission for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Community Outreach Mentoring and Empowerment (COME), Rotary Club St. Martin Sunrise.

The family reading nights are an initiative of the SXM Reads campaign, which encourages reading as well as family participation. The event is free of charge. Each participating family will be rewarded with a free book and refreshments.
