MAHO, Sint Maarten – Wayne Drummond, a Sonesta Maho worker who was involved in the explosion accident last week has passed away in Colombia. Drummond was busy doing regular maintenance work in the boiler room when, for unknown reasons, an explosion occurred in the room, causing him to get burned all over his body. He was transported to SMMC and later airlifted to Colombia for advanced burn treatment.
After being over a week in Colombia, Drummond did not make it and succumbed to his injuries. Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) officers and emergency medical personnel responded on Sunday morning, September 20, 2026, to the serious workplace incident at the resort, where the male employee sustained severe burn injuries.
Preliminary information indicated the incident occurred during maintenance activities. The exact circumstances remain under investigation by the Fire Department of Sint Maarten, and authorities said there were no indications of criminal activity.
