SINT MAARTEN (KPSM) — As part of ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and security on Sint Maarten, the Korps Politie Sint Maarten (KPSM) Flex Team, conducted security and traffic controls throughout various areas of the country during the afternoon hours of September 28 going into the early morning hours of September 29, 2026.
During the nighttime controls, officers attempted to stop a dark-colored vehicle traveling along the A.Th. Illidge road after it was observed coming from the direction of a fast-food establishment in the Dutch Quarter area.
The driver failed to comply with the officers’ instructions to stop and instead increased the vehicle’s speed.
The driver continued fleeing at high speed in the direction of Mount William Hill.
Officers initiated a short pursuit; however, the vehicle was subsequently lost from sight.
Public urged to cooperate with officer’s instructions during these controls
KPSM reminds all motorists that they are required to comply with lawful instructions given by police officers and other authorized personnel during traffic and security controls. Failure to comply may constitute a violation of applicable traffic laws and can result in enforcement action.
Similar controls were conducted in several locations, including: Dutch Quarter, Cole Bay, Indigo Bay Round about, the Osborne Kruythoff Roundabout, Maho, and the Cupecoy area.
During the operations:
- 24 vehicles were stopped and subjected to controls.
- Preventive searches were conducted.
- 34 persons were searched.
- No illegal weapons or controlled substances were found during the searches.
KPSM emphasizes that these controls are part of its ongoing commitment to preventing crime, maintaining public order, and ensuring the safety and security of residents and visitors.
Additional controls will continue in the coming period. KPSM urges the public to cooperate with officers during these operations so that the controls can be conducted safely, efficiently, and respectfully.
