SINT MAARTEN — Wendell Moore, an accomplished journalist and radio host on PJD2, as well as a former educator, has collaborated with the CLIMB Foundation to further the National Literacy Movement: Drop Everything and Read SXM. This initiative aligns with CLIMB’s mission, Advancing the Community Together (ACT), and aims to enhance both cultural and functional literacy within St. Martin while promoting reading as a powerful instrument for empowerment.

CLIMB Foundation partnered with the St. Martin Book Fair, which celebrated its 23rd annual event from June 5 to 6, 2026, and with the House of Nehesi Publishers to officially launch the National Literacy Movement on July 8. During this event, community members were encouraged to pause their daily activities to engage with literature authored by local writers. Many participants organized book parties and shared their experiences on social media, utilizing photographs and videos to document their engagements.

In observance of Caribbean Literacy Day, established by the House of Nehesi Publishers in 2020, numerous organizations hosted book parties throughout St. Martin and other Caribbean nations on July 12. As the community endeavors to foster a culture of literacy, schools are set to engage in the Drop Everything and Read St. Martin event on September 8 in recognition of International Literacy Day.

Mr. Moore, a committed advocate for literacy on his radio program “View Point with Wendell Moore,” remains dedicated to motivating the community to read to acquire knowledge. In partnership with the CLIMB Foundation, he offers community members the opportunity to win books authored by local writers on his show every week until the conclusion of September 2026. Listeners are invited to call in and respond to questions posed by Mr. Moore or featured local authors to earn a book. This initiative reflects a collaborative effort among local authors, the House of Nehesi Publishers, and the CLIMB Foundation, aiming to make literacy a shared community endeavor.
