PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — An official delegation of Statia is in Philadelphia this week ahead of the opening of “The First Salute: An Untold Story of the American Revolution”, presented as part of the United States Semiquincentennial at the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History.

The delegation is led by Island Governor Alida Francis and includes Island Council representatives from both factions, Clyde van Putten and Mercedes Lopes-Spanner; Island Secretary Malvern Dijkshoorn-Lopes; Social Domain Director Carol Jack; Unit Manager for Culture Sjahairah Flemming; and Region Deal representatives Raimie Richardson, Nicole Asin and Eric Hartstra.

On 21 April 2026, the delegation attended a preview and guided tour of the exhibition alongside members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. The visit provided an opportunity to engage directly with the exhibition and to view how St. Eustatius’ role in the American Revolution is presented to an international audience.

The exhibition highlights the events of November 1776, when St. Eustatius became the first foreign entity to formally acknowledge the United States. It places this moment within the broader historical context of global trade and the Caribbean’s strategic importance during the period.

Artefacts from St. Eustatius form part of the exhibition and contribute to the historical narrative presented at the museum.

The official opening programme is scheduled for 22 April 2026 and will include a press preview, opening reception and formal programme at the museum.

Island Governor Alida Francis is expected to deliver remarks on behalf of St. Eustatius during the opening events.

The delegation’s participation forms part of the wider lead-up to the commemoration of Statia Day on 16 November 2026, marking 250 years since the First Salute.

Further updates will be provided following the official opening.
