PHILIPSBURG – The Philipsburg Jubilee Library, in collaboration with Safe Haven and Safe St. Maarten/ St. Martin will be launching its new series – The Power of Knowledge 2017.

The first of many such informative and motivational evenings starts with the screening of the documentary, “The Mask You Live In.” This information evening will be held on Thursday, February 9, from 6:00pm to 9:30pm.

The critically acclaimed film The Mask You Live In, sheds light on the experiences of young boys and older males growing up in a society and community that facilitates an insecure sense of masculine identity. “Too often are our males confronted with phrases such as: ‘Be a man, grow some balls, don’t be a fag, don’t let your woman run your life’ on a daily basis in our households, on our streets, practically everywhere in our St. Maarten/St. Martin community.

Through its Power of Knowledge Series, the library hopes to bring awareness through various subject matter and to help empower our boys and men,” a release said.

A panel discussion to address the issues of masculinity and the insecurity, especially in relation to intimate partner violence, drinking, homophobia, depression, bullying and the stigmatization of male intimacy as well as crime will be the highlight of this evening. It promises to be a dynamic conversation with panelist Francio Guadeloupe, Laurent Druin Le May and Cassandra Richardson.

Participation will be encouraged from the audience as persons will have the opportunity to ask pertinent questions. “Our goal is to get to the heart of the issue and find solutions for the betterment of our community. This, we also hope will shed light on the current situation – the unhealthy relationship between men and women and the impact on domestic violence.

All are invited, particularly parents, educators and those who work with young men and boys, to this the first of many talks/ discussions. Through its Power of Knowledge Series, the Philipsburg Jubilee Library sees 2017 as a very productive year,” the release concluded.
