SINT MAARTEN — The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) is investigating an unusual incident that unfolded on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, involving a false report of a shooting, the discovery of three children in deplorable living conditions, and the subsequent arrest of a 31-year-old woman in connection with a separate criminal investigation.

Around midday on November 3, an elderly woman approached the police station after receiving alarming information from her granddaughter indicating that her mother had allegedly been shot.

After several unsuccessful attempts to contact her daughter, the concerned grandmother decided to seek assistance from the police. Taking the report seriously, personnel from the Detective Department, together with uniformed officers, proceeded to the residence of the allegedly injured woman to investigate the situation.

Upon arrival, officers discovered three children living under deplorable conditions. Due to serious concerns regarding their safety and well-being, the children were removed from the residence and handed over to the Court of Guardianship for further attention and necessary intervention.

Meanwhile, police continued their investigation and efforts to locate the mother, who was believed to have possibly sustained gunshot injuries. At approximately 8:05 p.m. that same evening, the mother, identified by the initials S.O., 31 years old, appeared at the police station demanding the return of her three children.

Further investigation revealed that the alleged shooting had not taken place and that the story was apparently intended as a prank to frighten the grandmother. During the course of the investigation, it was also established that S.O. was wanted in connection with a separate incident involving alleged property destruction and ill-treatment of her former boyfriend, which occurred on November 2, 2026.

S.O. was subsequently arrested in connection with that investigation and remains in police custody pending further investigation. The Police Force of Sint Maarten wishes to remind the public that false reports involving serious crimes, particularly incidents involving firearms or possible injuries, are not matters to be taken lightly. Such reports can cause unnecessary distress to family members, trigger emergency police responses, and divert valuable resources from genuine emergencies.

KPSM also emphasizes that the safety and well-being of children must always remain a priority. Situations in which children are found living under unsafe or unacceptable conditions will be treated with the utmost seriousness, in cooperation with the relevant child protection authorities.
