SINT EUSTATIUS — The Statia Government was informed today, Friday, 11 September 2026, of a diesel spill involving a vessel in Statia waters. An estimated 20 to 30 litres of diesel entered the sea.
The Government’s crisis management team, including the acting Island Governor, was notified immediately. Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) and maritime personnel at GTI were also informed.
Response measures began soon after the spill was discovered. Based on the estimated amount released and the type of fuel involved, the diesel is expected to evaporate and naturally disperse over time. Containment booms were therefore not considered necessary. Tug vessels used propeller wash to help break up and disperse the diesel on the surface.
Initial observations showed that the spill was moving west. Based on the information available at this time, no impact to Statia’s shoreline is expected.
The spill remains under observation, with changes in currents, weather and sea conditions being monitored. An inspection of the vessel is also in effect to determine the cause of the spill.
The Statia Government remains in contact with all partners involved in the response. Monitoring will continue, and further information will be shared if there is a significant change in the situation.
