Oranje Fonds Honors Organization for Its Commitment to Young People’s Future Opportunities

The Mega D Youth Foundation from Sint Eustatius has won an “Appeltje van Oranje 2026” award. This afternoon at Noordeinde Palace, Queen Máxima presented the Oranje Fonds recognition awards to three initiatives that help people break the cycle of poverty in a sustainable way. The other winners are Stek – Buurt & Lukas from The Hague and Stichting Doors Wide Open from Hof van Twente.

This year’s theme, “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Together,” enables the Oranje Fonds to shine a spotlight on organizations that demonstrate that poverty is about much more than just a lack of money. It affects health, opportunities, and a sense of belonging. The three winners are making a difference not only by providing immediate assistance, but also by building long-term prospects and self-reliance based on equality and trust.

Truly seeing, hearing, and valuing people

Sandra Jetten, director of the Oranje Fonds: “Poverty affects an enormous number of people across our Kingdom and often prevents them from fully participating in society, leaving them feeling excluded. The winners of the Appeltjes van Oranje award demonstrate just how crucial it is for people to truly feel seen, heard, and valued. By treating people experiencing poverty not as a problem, but as partners and experts, they are building a stronger and more just society in which everyone can participate.”

Mega D Youth Foundation

The Mega D Youth Foundation is dedicated to helping children and young people on Sint Eustatius, with a focus on their future opportunities. The organization offers young people a safe and stimulating environment where they receive guidance, develop new skills, and discover their talents.

Through homework assistance and activities focused on personal development, sports, music, and creativity—among other things—Mega D helps young people build their self-confidence and independence. By investing in knowledge, skills, and opportunities at a young age, the organization aims to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. In this way, Mega D gives young people the chance to believe in themselves and in their future.

Emma de Jong: “We not only help young people believe in themselves, but we also give them the practical skills and experience they need to shape their own futures.”
