PHILIPSBURG — Sint Maarten attorney Ashton Richardson has been admitted to the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights for its 2026–2028 Executive Master, Master of Advanced Studies in International Law in Armed Conflict.
The academy, a joint center of the University of Geneva’s Faculty of Law and the Geneva Graduate Institute, is widely recognized for work in international humanitarian law, human rights and international criminal law. Each cohort is limited to about 40 participants, drawing experienced legal professionals from around the world.
Brooks & Associates, where Richardson has practiced for more than five years under senior attorney Brenda Brooks, LL.M., said his admission places a Sint Maarten lawyer in that international group.
Richardson already holds an LL.B. in International and European Law and an LL.M. in Global Criminal Law, which he earned with honors. He is also completing a second Bachelor of Laws through the University of Curaçao.
The two-year programmed is designed for working professionals. Richardson will continue representing clients at the Philipsburg firm while studying. The firm said the additional training is expected to strengthen its work in human rights, immigration, administrative law and other complex matters.
Richardson was sworn in as an attorney in February 2025 before the Joint Court of Justice. Born and raised on Sint Maarten, he earlier studied in the Netherlands and interned at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s Trial Chambers before returning home to practice.
Brooks & Associates congratulated Richardson on the admission, calling it a notable achievement for both the attorney and the island.
