Planned seatbelt compliance check on Sint Eustatius
Sint Eustatius — On Tuesday, the 8th of September, the police conducted planned traffic checks on Oranjebaaiweg and Charles A. Arnaud Road on Sint Eustatius. The checks focused on seatbelt compliance for vehicle occupants.
During the check on Oranjebaaiweg, five(5) vehicles were checked. One driver was issued a warning for not wearing a seatbelt, another driver was fined for driving without valid insurance, and a third driver was fined for not wearing a seatbelt. During the check on Charles A. Arnaud Road, two vehicles were checked, with both drivers receiving a fine. One for failing to produce a driver’s license and the other for not wearing a seatbelt.
The Caribbean Netherlands Police Force (KPCN) reminds everyone that, pursuant to Article 82, Paragraph 1, Sub F of the Sint Eustatius Road Traffic Ordinance 2022 (Wegenverkeersverordening Sint Eustatius 2022), both the driver and passengers of a motor vehicle are required to wear a seatbelt. The police will continue to conduct traffic checks to enforce compliance with traffic regulations.
Arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol on Saba
Saba — On Saturday, the 5th of September, at around 6:35 PM, a 50-year-old man with the initials S.B.v.H. was arrested on Thais Hill Road on Saba for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The suspect reversed his pick-up truck into another vehicle. In accordance with the “botsen is blazen” policy , a breathalyzer test was administered, which revealed that he had consumed more alcohol than legally permitted.
He was arrested and taken to the police station. Because a formal breath analysis could not be conducted, the public prosecutor decided to withhold the suspect’s car keys until the following day. Additionally, the suspect was issued an official report for driving under the influence.
Scooter taken to police station on Sint Eustatius
Sint Eustatius — On Saturday, the 5th of September, at around 5:45 PM, a police patrol spotted a scooter rider without a helmet on Paula C. Dorner Road on Sint Eustatius. The driver then parked the scooter at a residence on the same street. During the check, the driver was able to produce a driver’s license and insurance documents.
Further investigation revealed that police had previously stopped and fined this rider for riding without a helmet. After the procedure was explained to the driver, he refused to cooperate with taking the scooter to the police station for further investigation.
After multiple attempts and further explanations given to both the driver and bystanders, the officers succeeded in transporting the scooter to the station. Following the investigation, the scooter was returned to the driver, and a discussion was held with him regarding his behavior and that of the bystanders during the check.
