Philipsburg, Sint Maarten – On World Senior Citizen Day 2026, the Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor, the Honorable Claret Connor, joins the people of Sint Maarten in honoring the men and women whose strength, sacrifice, wisdom, and perseverance helped build the foundation on which our island stands today.
“Our seniors are the people who built this island and raised its children. They are the shoulders on which we stand,” Minister Connor said.
Across generations, our senior citizens have contributed to the strength of our families, our communities, and our nation. Their stories carry our history. Their experiences offer guidance. And their continued presence reminds us of where we come from and the values that have shaped our beloved Sint Maarten.
The Minister emphasized that honoring our seniors must extend beyond words.
“As Minister, I, and every citizen, stand on your shoulders, and I recognize that the responsibility for the wellbeing, dignity, and quality of life as a senior citizen is one that I and this Ministry carry, and I take that responsibility seriously. We must continue to listen to you, understand the challenges you face, and ensure that you remain connected, independent, and meaningful within our society.”
The Minister would also like to express appreciation to the organizations, caregivers, families, churches, and community groups that work throughout the year to support senior citizens and promote their wellbeing.
In recognition of World Senior Citizen Day, the Sint Maarten Senior Citizens Organization, in partnership with the Home Away from Home Foundation, will host a Walk-a-thon on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The walk is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. from the Walter Plantz Pier in Philipsburg, bringing the community together in celebration of and solidarity with Sint Maarten’s senior citizens.
The Ministry encourages the community to support the initiative and to continue recognizing the value of our seniors—not only on this day, but throughout the year.
“To all our senior citizens: you paved the way. You continue to matter! You deserve to be seen, heard, respected, and cared for. Your legacy strengthens our nation, and your presence continues to inspire us.”
Happy World Senior Citizen Day, Sint Maarten.
