Police take action against heavy equipment

 

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — On Friday, February 3, representatives from VROMI, Windward Roads, St. Maarten Concrete and Port St. Maarten met with representatives from the Police Traffic Department.

The main topics discussed regarded material such as gravel, sand and concrete that is spilled on the streets during transportation, left as is, and not cleaned up. These spills are mainly caused due to the overloading of the vehicle, which is illegal. This sometimes causes traffic back-ups, leaving severe damage to the streets, which could lead to large financial consequences.

Police will definitely be addressing this illegal act and also controlling the drivers of these vehicles, who must have the required driver’s license to operate them. Another topic discussed is the hours that heavy equipment is not allowed on the public roads. These hours are from 6:30am to 8:30am and from 12:00pm to 2:30pm.

These measures also apply to all persons and businesses that operate this type of equipment. Not adhering to these rules and regulations can lead to fines ranging from NAf. 500 to 25,000, and confiscation of the equipment.
