PHILIPSBURG – The three suspects in the Efeze investigation (firearms trafficking, drug trafficking and money laundering) will be remanded to custody for another 60 days.

On Monday, April 4, the Judge of Instruction granted the prolonged custody of the suspects. Although one of the suspects, V.R., is 81 years old, the Prosecutor’s Office and the Judge of Instruction considered the facts too serious to release him pending the ongoing investigation. The two other suspects in this case are R.R. (23) and I.F. (55).

A fourth suspect in this case, R.R. (27) has been questioned. R.R. is currently serving a jail sentence of 16 years at the Pointe Blanche prison for several attempted homicides. On March 16, the Prosecutor of St. Maarten, the Kingdom Detectives Cooperation Team (RST) and the Judge of Instruction carried out two house searches in Dutch Quarter and on the French side.

The searches were carried out with assistance from KPSM and the French Gendarmerie. Also with assistance of prison personnel, a cell search in the prison was carried out on the same day. Several firearms and ammunition were found and seized.
