COLE BAY, Sint Maarten — Renzo Gracie St Maarten (SXM BJJ) Muay Thai Instructor Akeem Lewis was promoted to the rank of purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on Monday, January 15th by Head Instructor Melissa Bardfield.
Akeem Lewis is the head Muay Thai (kickboxing) instructor at SXM BJJ under the guidance of Marco London. Akeem has been studying the art of grappling diligently for over five years under Renzo Gracie Black Belt and founder of SXM BJJ, Melissa Bardfield.
“Sensei Akeem is an exceptional athlete and teacher, he’s constantly studying and improving and I’m very proud to recognize his progress. Akeem now holds the highest ranked promotion in the 8 year history of our Academy”.
Belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are awarded based on competence; there are no official belt tests. Adult belt ranks are white, blue, purple, brown and black.
Only recognized Black Belts are authorized to promote belt ranks and stripes. Extra belt colors are awarded to children beginning from grey, yellow, orange and green. Only after the age of 16 are students eligible to receive a blue belt.
