Trinidad – The safety of journalists remains a high priority for law enforcement officers.

At a meeting with the Media Association (Matt) on June 26, the acting Police Commissioner assured journalists that their safety is “a major area of concern”.

Acting Commissioner Stephen Williams met with a Matt delegation that included its President Francesca Hawkins, Secretary Jabari Fraser, Floor Member Dr. Sheila Rampersad to discuss matters of mutual interest.

Matt officials said they were concerned over police treatment of threats made against journalists via social media, among other issues.

Williams said the Police Service would work with the Association to probe the online harassment of journalists.

The meeting was held at the Police Administration Building, Port-of-Spain.
