WILLEMSTAD – January 4 was a special day for lawyer Karyl Bertrand as it marks 20 years since she was called to the bar as the first lawyer of this new millennium in Curacao.
Karyl Bertrand did an internship at law firm Sulvaran & Peterson and, after earning her law degree, joined law firm Winkel Soliana & Grul in Curacao on December 1, 1999 pending being called to the bar on January 4, 2000 as the only lawyer to be sworn in on that day.
She worked until November 30, 2013 at Winkel Soliana & Grul / Soliana Bonapart & Aardenburg. As of December 1, 2013, she has her own law firm called Bertrand Legal & IP Consultancy. In addition to practicing as a lawyer, Karyl Bertrand still lectures for the HBO Legal Assistant academic programme and also provides various courses for companies and has meanwhile taken important international steps. She is a member of international organizations such as INTA (International Trademark Association), GALA (Global Advertising Lawyers Alliance), IPCA (Intellectual Property Caribbean Association) and ASIPI (Asosiaciόn Interamericana de la Propiedad Intelectual).
As a member of INTA’s Anti-Counterfeiting Committee Latin America and Caribbean, she coordinated a seminar in Jamaica last year on strategies to combat counterfeiting of brand products in the Caribbean. Attendees included representatives from customs, police force, and manufacturing sector from Jamaica and lawyers from Jamaica, the United States and the Dominican Republic. This was followed by an information session for local authorities in Curacao. Karyl Bertrand also gave a presentation at the prestigious Yale Club in New York during the GALA Advertising Law seminar on the legal aspects of launching a Global Advertising Campaign.
She was joined by colleagues from Ireland, Germany, Argentina, South Africa, Turkey and the United States. The presentation is part of online postgraduate courses for attorneys in the United States. In 2018, Karyl Bertrand was a member of the panel during the Caribbean Seminar on Advertising Law in Jamaica and spoke on Advertising in the Dutch Caribbean. Attendees included companies, organizations and lawyers from the region. With regard to GALA, Bertrand Legal & IP Consultancy is an exclusive member for the Dutch Caribbean. Karyl Bertrand has contributed to various GALA international publications on legal aspects of advertising and marketing in traditional and social media.
In recent years she has attended the Annual INTA Meeting, which more than 10,000 intellectual property practitioners from around the world attend. In 2017 the conference was held in Barcelona, in 2018 in Seattle and in 2019 in Boston. The 2020 edition will take place in Singapore. This edition of the INTA Meeting has a special sentiment for Karyl Bertrand, because IPCA (Intellectual Property Caribbean Association) will have a panel during the INTA Meeting and she gladly accepted to be a panelist to speak on Sanitary Registration in the Dutch Caribbean, in particular registration of pharmaceuticals and food products.
That is a historic moment for her, because she has long visualized herself as a speaker during this conference and is looking forward to the opportunity to promote the commercial importance of the Dutch islands. The Annual INTA Meeting in Singapore will take place between 25 and 29 April. There are few conferences in the world that have more than 10,000 attendees consisting of professionals in their field.
The last INTA Annual Meeting even had over 11,000 participants.
